Two Georgia police officers shot one dead
A Georgia police officer was fatally shot on Wednesday morning, and another one is in "very, very critical" condition after they responded to a domestic dispute, authorities say.
Officer Nicholas Smarr of the Americus Police Department was killed, and the severely wounded officer was identified as Georgia Southwestern State University Officer Jody Smith.
Officers Smarr and Smith were shot while responding to a report of a dispute at an apartment complex near the campus at approximately 9:40 a.m., according to Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles.
"We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the families and friends," Americus Police Chief Mark Scott said, according to WTVM. "There are no words to express the pain and the sorrow we in Americus feel at this loss."
