San Jose homicide suspect arrested at U.S. border
SAN JOSE - The man suspected in a fatal stabbing in the Edenvale neighborhood earlier this month was arrested while reportedly trying to re-enter the country from Mexico, according to San Jose police.
Deven Bargas, 20, of San Jose, was arrested Friday at the U.S.-Mexico border by Customs and Border Protection officers who discovered a murder warrant issued for him when they looked up his identity, police said.
Bargas was wanted in the death of 21-year-old Lucas Gutierrez, who was found stabbed the morning of Oct. 18 in the 300 block of Branham Lane East. He later died at the hospital.
Early on in the investigation, detectives gathered information suggesting that Bargas fled to Mexico. Police did not release how or whether the suspect and victim were connected.
Bargas is being held without bail in the San Diego County jail, where he was booked on suspicion of first-degree murder. He is expected to be transported to Santa Clara County in the coming week.
The stabbing marked the 28th of the year in San Jose.
Anyone with information about the case can call San Jose police Detective Sgt. Bert Milliken or Detective Raul Corral at 408-277-5283, or leave a tip with Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408-947-STOP or svcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
